Understanding A Poem

Hi,
Below are questions that can be asked to further understand a poem.

What is the poem about? (titles usually give hints about this.)
------------------------

Why is the writer writing this poem in the first place?
What is his/her purpose?
Who did the poet think would read the poem?
How does this affect the way the poet wrote the poem?
------------------------

What kind of language does the poet use?
Are there any unusual or special words?
What effect does thee use of words create on you?

------------------------

How does this poem appeal to the senses? If so, which ones?
(there are there usual 5 senses, and an additional 2, which consists of FEELINGS and THOUGHTS.)
How does the poet do this?
------------------------

What emotions are in the poem?
How much emotions is there?
How is it created?
------------------------

What devices are used in the poem? (e.g. metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia)
How do you think the poet intended you to respond to these devices?
------------------------
